We had intended to camp at the Liard Hot Springs campground, but they fill up fast and didn’t have any space for us. We drove down the road a little further and came across the Coal River Lodge RV and Campground (thank you, Milepost). We walked in to an office with a few family members lounging around, and they said “You want to camp? People usually just drive past this place!” They are one of the few lodges still operational since the 1940′s, and they claim to have the largest private property on the Alcan. We had our choice of lovely campsites, and walked across an airplane landing strip covered in approximately 200-300 buffalo turds (also known as Pioneer Frisbees), to a gorgeous view of the Liard River.
